Owendo, the deep-water port for Libreville, is situated on an estuary, about 9 miles southeast of the City. Special facilities at the port include a Container Terminal and a Cacao depot. The former provides 37,000 m2 of space for container handling. There are facilities for lumber and an oil terminal for manganese. There is a 40-hectare industrial zone near the port. Storage facilities at the Commercial Port include 15,000 m2 of covered storage space, 9ha of open storage space (3 ha for general cargoes, 4 for containers and 2 for other cargoes) and some cold storage space. Storage facilities at the Lumber Port include a floating lumber store on a 40-ha water area and 12-ha of open storage space on land. There is rail and road access to the storage area for heavy timber. Expansion plans for the construction of two deep-water wharves and the further addition of open storage space both for general cargoes and for containers. Rail links are available (Owendo is the terminus of the Transgabonese Railroad).

Port Gentil, located on the Atlantic Coast of the African continent, is one of the principal ports of Gabon. It is primarily known as a commercial and fishing port and is also used for lumber and oil. Discharge of cargoes is handled by using vessels’ own gear. There is a 15-ton traveling crane for heavy lifts and logs, and there are light cranes at the wharves for lighters. A 30-ha area is used for customs, with a 6,000 m2 hangar alongside the wharf. Other facilities at the port include a cold storage facility for fish. The port is served by 19,000 m2 of asphalt roads and 2,000 m2 of paved surface.
